Planning your year wisely is key to enjoying more free time, travel, or just a well-earned rest. In 2025, Norway has several public holidays (often called “røde dager”) that you can use to get the most out of your schedule—or even earn extra money if you choose to work on those days through Time2Staff.

Norwegian Public Holidays in 2025

According to Norsk Kalender, here are the official public holidays for 2025:

  1. New Year’s Day – Wednesday, January 1

  2. Maundy Thursday – Thursday, April 17

  3. Good Friday – Friday, April 18

  4. Easter Sunday – Sunday, April 20

  5. Easter Monday – Monday, April 21

  6. Labour Day – Thursday, May 1

  7. Constitution Day – Saturday, May 17

  8. Ascension Day – Thursday, May 29

  9. Pentecost Monday (Whit Monday) – Monday, June 9

  10. Christmas Day – Thursday, December 25

  11. Boxing Day – Friday, December 26

Note: Christmas Eve (December 24) and New Year’s Eve (December 31) are not official public holidays, but many workplaces have shorter hours on these dates. On the Wednesday before Maundy Thursday, it’s also common for workplaces to close earlier.

Tips for your holidays

  • Plan early: If you add vacation days around weekends or public holidays, you can extend your time off. Book travel and accommodations in advance to find better deals and skip last-minute stress.

  • Take advantage of midweek holidays: Some holidays fall on Thursdays or Mondays. Adding a single day off next to a public holiday can turn a normal weekend into a four-day break.

  • Balance activity and rest: It’s tempting to fill every free moment with travel or social events, but remember to schedule downtime, too. Rested people come back to work or study with more energy.

Extra pay on public holidays: work with Time2Staff

Many workplaces in Norway pay extra for shifts on public holidays. For example, state employees receive an hourly wage plus 100% from 00:00 to 24:00 on official holidays (excluding Sundays), and from 12:00 to 24:00 on certain holiday eves (like Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve).

If you’d like to earn more on these days, Time2Staff can help:

  • Work on New Year’s Day or May 17: By working on January 1 or May 17 through Time2Staff, you can earn a 100% higher hourly rate.
